Chapter 3 | From Iowa to the Missions
Young Vincent McCauley

From Iowa to the Missions

Born on March 8, 1906, in Council Bluffs, Iowa, Vincent Joseph McCauley was raised in a deeply Catholic family where faith, prayer, and service shaped everyday life. The eldest of six children, Vincent learned from an early age the importance of hard work, discipline, and devotion to God.

The Rosary was prayed daily in the McCauley household, fostering in young Vincent a lifelong love for the Blessed Virgin Mary. This Marian devotion would become one of the defining characteristics of his spirituality and missionary ministry.

As a student at Creighton Preparatory School, Vincent excelled academically and athletically. He was particularly gifted in baseball and even played semi-professionally to help finance his education. Yet despite his success on the field, God was preparing him for a different calling.

"With Mary, you cannot go wrong."

— Bishop Vincent J. McCauley, C.S.C.

The Call to Holy Cross

In November 1924, Vincent responded to God's invitation by entering the Congregation of Holy Cross. Inspired by the missionary spirit of the Congregation and its commitment to education, evangelization, and service, he began the journey that would define the rest of his life.

Holy Cross offered him a vision of priesthood rooted in faith, sacrifice, and mission. The Congregation's motto, Ave Crux, Spes Unica — "Hail the Cross, Our Only Hope" — became the guiding principle of his vocation.

He professed perpetual vows on July 2, 1929, graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1930, and continued his preparation for priesthood with enthusiasm and dedication.

Ordained for Mission

On June 24, 1934, Vincent McCauley was ordained a priest at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart at the University of Notre Dame.

Ordination did not mark the end of his journey; rather, it marked the beginning of a life completely dedicated to Christ and His Church. Deep within his heart burned a desire to serve as a missionary wherever God might send him.

That opportunity arrived in 1936 when he received an assignment to Bengal, then part of British India. Leaving behind family, homeland, and familiarity, Father McCauley embraced the uncertainty of missionary life with courage and joy.

A Missionary Heart

Father McCauley arrived in Dhaka on November 16, 1936. The culture was unfamiliar, the climate demanding, and the challenges immense. Yet he immediately immersed himself in the work of evangelization, education, and formation.

While serving among the Kuki people, he contracted malaria and suffered repeated illnesses. Even as tropical diseases weakened his body, his missionary spirit remained strong. Fellow missionaries remembered him as consistently cheerful, kind, and hopeful despite physical suffering.

His years in Bengal taught him invaluable lessons about sacrifice, humility, perseverance, and love for the people he served. These experiences would prepare him for the even greater mission that awaited him in East Africa.
