Who Was Bishop McCauley?

Vincent Joseph McCauley, C.S.C., was born in Council Bluffs, Iowa in 1906, a son of the American heartland who heard the call to serve beyond all borders. Entering the Congregation of Holy Cross in 1924, he embraced a life of sacrifice, teaching and ministering before being sent as a missionary to Bengal.

Appointed the first Bishop of Fort Portal in Uganda, he spent decades building the local Church, constructing schools, seminaries, and hospitals.

“To love Christ means to give oneself entirely, to pour out one's life so that the light of the Gospel may shine in every corner of the earth.”

The Path to Sainthood: Bishop McCauley’s Cause

Since 2006, the Catholic Church has been rigorously examining the life, virtues, and possible miracles attributed to the intercession of Bishop Vincent J. McCauley. The process involves deep theological, historical, and medical investigation before any declaration of sanctity.

Servant of God

Title granted in 2006 when the Diocese of Fort Portal formally opened the Cause. An initial investigation into his life and heroic virtue began.

Diocesan Inquiry

Witnesses, writings, and testimonies were collected. Canon lawyers and theologians examined Bishop McCauley’s life of holiness.

Medical & Theological Review

Reported favors or miracles undergo strict scrutiny by medical experts and theologians at the Vatican’s Dicastery for the Causes of Saints.
