The name “Bricklayers” comes from an expression often used by Servant of God Bishop Vincent J. McCauley, C.S.C. (1906–1982) while raising funds prior to establishing the Holy Cross Mission to East Africa in 1958. His missionary ministry was marked by a commitment to building strong local communities and lasting institutions. Having served as a Holy Cross missionary and later as a leader in the Congregation’s international ministries, he understood that meaningful change is accomplished through steady, collaborative effort.
While promoting support for Holy Cross missions, Fr. McCauley often shared a simple challenge:
“WANTED TO BUILD A BETTER WORLD:
FEWER ARCHITECTS,
MORE BRICKLAYERS!”

His message remains relevant today. The Twinning Program thrives because of people who move beyond ideas and take concrete steps to support their Holy Cross partners. The Bricklayers Matching Grant honors that spirit of solidarity, helping Twinning Partnerships strengthen ministries and expand their impact around the world…….
